The Craft
Chikankari Embroidery
Chikankari is Lucknow's most celebrated needlework tradition — a language of shadow and thread. Fabric is block-printed with a washable guide pattern, then handed to a karigari who works an array of named stitches — tepchi, bakhiya, murri, phanda — each producing a different texture and depth.
The finest stitches are nearly invisible from the front, casting only a soft shadow through the cloth. The tradition flourished under Mughal patronage in the 16th century and remains concentrated in the workshops of old Lucknow today.
