The Craft

Aari Embroidery

Aari embroidery is a centuries-old craft originating in Gujarat, India, worked with a fine hooked needle — an "aari" — to pull thread through taut fabric in a flowing chain stitch. Rooted in 12th-century leather-working traditions, it was later adopted by royal ateliers to embroider silks and wools with intricate floral and paisley motifs.

Each piece is anchored in a wooden frame, with the artisan working entirely by hand, reading no pattern — the design lives in memory and muscle.
